Guidelines for establishing a Disability History Week:
The Steps:
- Determine why this is important and what you hope to accomplish by establishing a Disability History Week. It is important to give this issue much thought as you will have to make a case of why others might want to support you and your partners in this initiative. Begin documenting your reasons as your 'Talking Points.' (Provide examples of 'making the case').
- Research other states' efforts. Review their proposed legislation. Talk to advocates from other states who have been successful in passing a bill (ex. West Virginia) or who have successfully submitted proposed legislation.
- Identify who your likely supporters will be, including political figures, self-advocacy/youth groups, parent/family advocacy groups, educational establishments and other agencies with similar interests or who provide services to individuals with disabilities.
- Find a legislator who is willing to support your proposed bill. Work with that person/office to develop and refine your draft legislation. Consider including wording that reflects why this initiative is important and what it will look like once it's passed (i.e. what you hope to accomplish). You may choose to use legislation from other states as a model or amend existing legislation within your state.
- Begin discussions with your supporters! Share your talking points, a copy of the proposed legislation and any other resources you may have that will help in the implementation of Disability History Week (ex. curriculum). Compose a sample support letter and make it available to your potential supporters. Consider giving presentations during your outreach efforts.
- Maintain communication with your legislator(s) and supporters on the status of the bill.
- Begin making plans to implement Disability History Week in your state!
